Sukhothai Kingdom or Ayutthaya Period, c. 1300–1400 AD, Sukhothai Province, Si Satchanalai, Ban Pa Yang Kilns, Thailand

An exquisitely crafted small stoneware covered box, finely wheel-thrown and hand-painted with elegant precision. The domed lid is surmounted by a delicately modeled lotus-bud finial, encircled by a painted floral medallion. The body and lid are richly adorned with concentric circles and scrolling vegetal motifs, rendered in underglaze grayish-brown pigment and divided by raised linear bands — a testament to the artisan’s remarkable control and refined aesthetic. The entire surface is coated in a soft, translucent milky-white glaze that lends the piece a serene luminosity.

The royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai—later known as Sawankhalok—stood at the heart of one of Southeast Asia’s most important ceramic-producing centers during the 14th century. The Ban Pa Yang kilns, renowned for their high-fired wares, produced ceramics that were not only treasured locally but also widely exported across Asia via extensive maritime trade networks.

While this example was discovered in Thailand, comparable pieces were highly esteemed in Japan, where they were often repurposed as incense boxes (kōgō) in the refined context of tea ceremonies. The delicate artistry and balanced proportions of Sawankhalok ceramics embody the timeless beauty and technical mastery of early Thai craftsmanship—objects that continue to resonate with collectors and connoisseurs for their understated elegance and cultural depth.
