Thai Sawankhalok Covered Box

Sukhothai Kingdom or Ayutthaya Period, c. 1300–1400 AD, Sukhothai Province, Si Satchanalai, Ban Pa Yang kilns, Thailand

A finely potted, wheel-thrown, and hand-painted stoneware box with a fitted domed lid, gracefully finished in a translucent milky-white glaze. The surface is decorated with concentric circles and scrolling vegetal motifs, rendered in underglaze grayish-brown and divided by delicately raised linear bands, demonstrating remarkable precision and control.

The royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai in north-central Thailand formed one of the most important ceramic-producing centers in Southeast Asia during the 14th century. Si Satchanalai—later known as Sawankhalok—became synonymous with refined, high-fired wares produced in the Ban Pa Yang kilns and widely exported through international maritime trade networks.

This example was discovered in Thailand, though similar pieces were highly prized in Japan, where they served as incense boxes for perfumed pellets used in tea ceremonies. The enduring beauty of Sawankhalok ceramics—with their luminous glazes, balanced forms, and intricate painted designs—reflects the artistic sophistication and far-reaching cultural influence of 14th-century Thai craftsmanship.
