Tudor Period, c. 1485–1603, England
A fascinating cast copper-alloy belt fastener of distinctive zoomorphic form, modelled as an elegant S-shaped serpent with a finely rendered head at each terminal. The mouths and eyes are clearly defined, while the sinuous body is embellished with carefully detailed scales, demonstrating the skill of the craftsman. At the center of the buckle is a raised circular collar flanked by stylized leaf motifs, from which a narrow ridge extends along both sides of the body, enhancing the dynamic form of the piece.
Snake-head buckles and fasteners have a long history in Britain, with examples known from the Roman period through the post-medieval era. Closely related forms, sometimes terminating in duck or dragon heads, remained popular throughout the Tudor period as practical yet decorative fittings for belts, straps, and garments. Such fasteners were particularly suited for securing heavy clothing, military tunics, and equipment.
The serpent carried rich symbolic associations throughout European history. In classical tradition it was linked to healing and regeneration through its connection with the staff of Asclepius, while in folk belief it often functioned as a protective or apotropaic motif, believed to ward off misfortune and malevolent forces. The continued use of snake imagery in Tudor dress accessories reflects the enduring appeal of these ancient symbolic traditions.
Combining practical functionality with striking decorative design, this finely cast buckle is a compelling example of Tudor metalwork and a testament to the survival of ancient symbolic imagery into the early modern period.
