Medieval Bronze Decorative Artifacts

A superb group of four small bronze-alloy decorative fittings, originally used to adorn caskets, leather goods, or garments. Each piece displays the refined aesthetic typical of Kievan Rus’ metalwork, with crisp detailing now softened by age. Once likely enhanced with silvering or gilding, the surfaces have developed a deep green archaeological patina, lending them a powerful sense of antiquity and long-buried history.

The Kievan Rus’ (c. 880–1240 AD), centered on Kyiv, was the earliest major political entity of the Eastern Slavs, its influence extending from the Carpathians to the Volga and from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Prosperous trade routes—linking Scandinavia, Byzantium, and the Eurasian steppe—nurtured a vibrant artistic culture that blended Norse, Byzantine, and local Slavic traditions. Bronze fittings of this type were essential in daily use yet also served as subtle markers of status and craftsmanship within one of medieval Europe’s most dynamic early states.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fine encrusted green patina. Rich earthen deposits throughout. Size varies from 8,0cm to 3,5cm. Sell as a set.
