Medieval Bronze Clothing Buckles

A remarkable group of three cast bronze buckles, some thickly formed and exhibiting the robust, utilitarian elegance characteristic of Kievan Rus’ metalwork. Their distinctive double-loop construction—documented across numerous Kievan Rus archaeological sites—allowed the loose end of the belt to be neatly secured behind the buckle, an ingenious and practical design solution. Though likely once enhanced with silvering or gilding, the surfaces now display a deep green archaeological patina, the product of centuries of age and burial.

The Kievan Rus’ (c. 880–1240 AD), centered on Kyiv, was the first major state of the Eastern Slavs, stretching from the Carpathians to the Volga and from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Its flourishing trade networks and artistic crosscurrents fostered a sophisticated material culture shaped by Scandinavian, Byzantine, and Slavic traditions. Bronze fittings such as these buckles served not only essential daily functions but also acted as subtle indicators of status and craftsmanship within one of medieval Europe’s most dynamic early states.

Good condition. Pin missing. Light surface wear consistent with age and use. Fine encrusted green patina. Corrosion and minimal dents. Size varies from 3,2cm to 2,5cm. Sell as a set.
